Berggren Excels In Rookie Season With Force

By John Montgomery

To say that former Barrington and Illini star Ashley Berggren made an impact in her rookie season with the Chicago Force would be an understatement. Berggren was rookie of the year for the Force and a WFA all-star as Chicago recorded its third unbeaten regular season in team history.

Berggren played wide receiver on offense catching three touchdowns, and was a standout defender with 11 tackles for loss and two sacks in her rookie campaign.

Berggren is one of the best high school athletes to ever play in the state of Illinois, competing in basketball, softball, and volleyball at Barrington. Berggren was All-State in softball and basketball. Berggren went on to be an All-American in basketball at the University of Illinois who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Tournament twice during her college days.

The Force was happy she agreed to play with squad in 2011.

"Obviously, I was thrilled," Chicago Force owner and general manager Linda Bache stated while attending tryouts earlier in December at Evanston Township High School for the 2012 season. "When she walked into the gym, I could tell she was an accomplished athlete by the way she carried herself. I knew immediately she was going to be an impact player for us."

"Ashley has a unique skill-set especially as a basketball player," Chicago Force Head Coach John Konecki said during tryouts at Evanston. "What you know about a player like that is that she has played at a high level. We’re excited about the opportunity of having her play football for us. It was a tremendous blessing."

Berggren paid dividends on opening day with a 59-yard touchdown reception in a 69-0 win over the Minnesota Machine at Winnemac Stadium in Chicago.

"Of course I was nervous," Berggren said on her debut with the Force. "Football was something I always wanted to do."

Berggren went on to have a fine season for the Force.

"I think she played extremely well," Bache admitted. "She was an All-Star. We could have used her full-time on both sides of the football, but we were trying to be mindful not to burn her out. She's a tremendous athlete."

"I think she took to the game quickly," Konecki said on Berggren's first season. "Ashley falls into that group of athlete that because of talent, no matter what you ask her to do she would excel. She had some growing pains. She would go home and do what she had to do to get better. I would say she did a tremendous job as a rookie for us."

Berggren is currently a teacher and head varsity basketball coach at Schaumburg.

"I realized we had a lot of talent," Berggren said on her rookie season with the Force which ended with a loss in the playoffs to the Boston Militia. "It's a great organization."

The Force will open the 2012 season on Saturday, April 14 against the Kansas City Tribe before returning to Chicago for the home opener against the Columbus Comets under the lights at Evanston High School.

Berggren is a big fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs.

Berggren enjoys coaching the girl's varsity squad at Schaumburg. In fact, the Saxons beat Barrington earlier this season.

"I really enjoy coaching," Berggren said. "It was much easier being a player. I really like to teach the fundamentals of the game. Every day you are presented with different challenges."

Berggren played professional basketball in the ABL and Sweden. For now, Berggren plans to remain a coach at the high school level instead of becoming a college coach.

"I do love the game," Berggren said about coaching at the college level. "I don't know if I could be involved 24 hours a day seven days a week. It's a huge time commitment. I like to travel. I like to do a lot of things. I am a very active person. I enjoy my free time."

Berggren was pleased to see her alma mater Illinois advance to the NCAA volleyball championship against UCLA. The Illini lost in four sets to UCLA.

"I'm not surprised at their success," Berggren said about her former school. "Illinois has had a great program for years. I felt very good going into the match against UCLA. I was hoping to wear a national championship T-shirt."

Berggren might play quarterback in the upcoming season for the Force. Stay tuned.

Bache and Konecki have high expectations for Berggren in her sophomore season with the Force. Berggren figures to be an impact player in 2012.
